Messages from Fr. Kim

Letter from Fr Kim to Hemel East Parish

“The Lord is my Shepherd, there is nothing I shall want” Psalm 23

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ

To say that we live in interesting times is an understatement.  I am sure that news has travelled far and wide, and by now you all know that our Cardinal has made the difficult decision to stop public Masses in the Diocese to help reduce social contact to respond to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.  This takes effect from the 20th March 2020.

This means that all Masses after the Friday evening Mass will be without a congregation.  It also means that all acts of public worship will be suspended, including the Stations of the Cross.    It has already led to difficult conversations with families who were planning to have their children baptised next weekend, and those who have funerals during the week.

It is important to remember the Churches will remain open at their normal times so that people can come and spend some time with the Lord in prayer.  Please remember the guidelines on social distancing and remember to wash your hands regularly.  There will also be resources that we can collect, resources to access on the internet and so on.  We also have a new facebook page and twitter feed, please take note of these resources and start following them.  We will endeavour to keep you all informed through all media possible.  The newsletter will be available on the website every week.  And most importantly, the Mass will still be celebrated by myself every day, except Wednesday, for the parish and for the intentions that we have.

The Church is not simply a building, but a body made up of living stones.  We are a parish family and remain a family even in these difficult circumstances.  It is more important than ever that we look out for each other, especially our more elderly and vulnerable parishioners.  We need to keep in touch and we will be looking for ways to do this.  Watch the facebook page and twitter feed for more information.  Please let the parish office know if you know of anyone that is likely to need help, even if it is simply a phone call.  Please let us know if you are able to help in any way.  Often we don’t know how much we value something till we no longer have it.  I pray we all come to value and appreciate the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist, as we endure this time without them.

On a personal note, please know that I, as your parish priest, will be celebrating Mass for you, will be praying for you and if you need anything, even just a chat, please do call me.  The number is 01442 210610.  Please spare a thought and prayer for me too!  If there are any emergencies please call and I will respond as best I can.

Let us all place our trust in the Lord that the time will come soon when we can all return to our normal parish life again.  May God bless us all.

Fr Kim
